Intelligent Fanatics are the world's greatest business builders. They create companies and organizations that dominate and stand the test of time. Charlie Munger was the first person to use the term Intelligent Fanatic. He described them as possessing business talents that allow them to do things that ordinary skilled mortals can't.

2023.06.08 09:57 Fallen-Republic Costco tires on non-OEM wheels
I thought I'd post this, as I just left Costco after buying tires.
My 09 Avalanche came with these gaudy 22" chrome wheels. Bought it used, and the tires were 305/40r22's. The wheels were a bit too flashy for us, but we have kept them for about a year and a half. The chrome just hasn't been doing se well on a vehicle that's now almost 15 years old. We hit a nail in the road, and after Les Schwab repaired it, they jacked up the wheel bead, no doubt due to the chrome peeling. But in short, the tire no longer holds pressure, even after just eight hours. Dead flat.
We decided this was the time to change things up, and found some good 18" wheels, then decided on a set of BF Goodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tires. Costco had the same price as anyone else, so we used them because of their warranty and ability to get any road damage repaired. For the record, we went with 285/60r18's.
At the Costco tire shop, they told me they wouldn't even touch the vehicle if the wheels weren't stock. Our salesperson was probably going with the notion that people who buy tires there aren't capable of changing one themself though. I had the (brand new) wheels AND sensors. After a bit of talking, they admitted they'd still sell me the tires, plus mount and balance them—but that since my wheels (and new tires) weren't the same as on the doorjam sticker, they'd do the wheels themselves—just not the truck. That's an important distinction.
We can't drive our Avalanche in for a rotation or tire balancing, but if we bring the wheels in seperately, they'll do it. They'll mount and balance and warranty and tire that fits on the wheel—they just won't touch the vehicle they're being used on if they don't match the oem sticker.
The tire/Costco warranty is still good. They'll still fix leaks. They'll still balance them. They just won't do shit if we bring them in mounted on our vehicle. If we have a leak that needs repair, if we have a warranty issue, we just have to bring the wheel/tire unattached from the vehicle.
No prob for me, I rotate on my own, and I can change a damn flat. Costco will still fix it, still warranty my T/A's up to the 60k miles—I just have to bring them in separate from the truck.
I searched and found a BUNCH of old posts about Costco not warrantying and tires/wheels that aren't OEM, that's just not true. They just WILL NOT touch a vehicle with non-OEM wheels. The solution is beyond simple: Take off the damn wheels, and bring them in on their own (as needed)!
Costco WILL warranty tires they sell, regardless of vehicle or OEM wheels. They just simply WILL NOT TOUCH a vehicle that rolls in with non-OEM wheels.
Hope this helps someone.
we do a lot of mountain driving.

2023.06.06 02:28 EasyyPeaseyy 2020 Chevy Silverado- very uneven tire wear and happened fast
So about 3 months ago a friend hit a curb in my 2020 Silverado. It popped the front passenger tire and I got two new front tires. I happen to park with the tires turned last week and noticed that the inside of the front driver tire had an inch strip that was almost showing wires. I took it to les Schwab to see what the deal was because I’ve never seen anything like this wear.
The guy tells me it’s a tie rod but that they don’t make a replacement part. I am now wondering if that is an accurate assessment of what’s wrong or what the deal is since you can’t buy a replacement.
Can anyone tell me if this seems right. It’s on the opposite side of the tire hit and he didn’t seem very confident when I questioned some things and just tried to get me to buy new tires.

2023.06.05 14:38 Communistlover214 Ford Explorer brakes swapped out?
So my father and I were doing some work on the Ford and shining the rims when we noticed that one of the brakes looked very rusted and oxidized as opposed to the other three brakes that were painted and looked very new. We replaced and painted those brake pads to look nice just a couple of weeks ago, so there's no way it would look like that. We had recently just taken it in for another reason, and that's when we noticed the brake change a couple of days later.
I'm not a specialist, so some things I'm referencing probably have different names. We went to our local Les Schwab to get the fixes/repairs. Both I and my father were wondering if they had actually done us dirty and swapped one of our break pads out with an older one to use ours to put on another car.

2023.05.31 19:29 monikar2014 I fucked up
My Misophonia hasn't been as acute the last few months. I spoke to the landlord and got the store owner downstairs to move her speaker so the bass doesn't come through my floor, I am very careful not to over stimulate myself, I spend a lot of time at home in recovery and recooperation. I am lucky I don't have to go out for school or work and when I do go out into the world I always bring my loop earplugs and Bose Q45 noise cancelling headphones. But not today. I forgot, I forgot my tools and now I am stuck at a Safeway while lea Schwab replaces a flat tire (les Schwab was even louder then safeway).) There is beeping and buzzing and layered voices and fucking music and I hate everyone how do people live like this? I'm going to have to sit here for who knows how many hours under siege by this endless wave of fucking mindless brain killing noise then once I am a wrung out twitching rag of a human I'm supposed to get in my noisy anxiety box of a machine and drive home? like I don't fucking hate driving already. Fuck me.

Since it seems that no one can be bothered to
search the sub for the word "mechanic" before making a new post, I searched it for you and summarized two years' worth of posts below.
TL;DR the recommendation is almost always "Rising Sun Motors" unless you've got an unusual vehicle or situation. Also, apparently
XSrcing has spent the past couple years quietly helping poor people fix their cars for free/cheap, so everyone be sure to buy that guy a beer next time you see him.

2023.05.28 02:20 Twstdktty Took my truck in to have the front brakes done, now both my hubs are broke
| In March I took my truck to Les Schwab to have my front brakes done. When I pick the truck up, they told me that the passenger side four-wheel-drive hub lock fell apart when they removed it to get to the rotor. I declined having them fix it because they said it would be at least $400. My truck has the original factory hub locks which are very difficult to find so I took the hub apart and it did not appear broken to me and seems to still engage fine. I called them to ask what specifically broke when they removed the hub and the mechanic said the spring in the back should be attached to the locking mechanism, and it is just free-floating. I decided to remove the driver side hub so I could compare the two and discovered two dents and several gouges to the outside of the housing. It is dented to the point. The locking mechanism cannot be removed and they are claiming it was not in that condition when it left but I have driven the truck maybe two times since picking it up because I was under the impression that it was not safe to drive, based on what they told me. Now both my hubs are fucked and I don’t know what to do submitted by Twstdktty to MechanicAdvice [link] [comments] |
2023.05.28 01:49 Hillosopher Car Shaking Diagnosis
Howdy! So my 2005 Honda Accord starting shaking about a year ago and I just started to try and resolve the issue. The car shakes between 60-65mph and stops shaking once the car gets faster than 65.
A couple months ago, I got brand new tires put on my car at Costco and let them know about the issue, so they also rebalanced my wheels. The car still shook, so I called them up and they said it was probably an alignment issue and that they don't do alignments. So I took my car to Les Schwab to get my car realigned. While the car was up, they noticed that one of the control arms needed replaced, so they did that, as well as realigned the car. The car still shook and Les Schwab said it was a balance issue then. So I took my car back to Costco and they rebalanced the car again. Car still shakes.
Assuming everything's been repaired correctly up to this point, what's the next step I should take for triaging this issue? Any idea what could be causing the shake? Thank ya kindly!

2023.05.17 23:47 DigBiggerNick69420 Does this look like it was purposely cut? (Story below)
| I replaced all 4 coilovers on my car recently. One of the front ones was failing and I used that as an excuse to upgrade. The car is a 2012 Subaru Impreza STi. I've done this same job many times on various cars over the years and everything went smoothly. I did a redneck alignment in my driveway and took it for a test drive. Everything felt fine, no weird rattles or anything, so I retorqued all the bolts and the next day I drove it a half hour to a Les Schwab to get a real alignment. When I picked up the car they gave me the alignment report and the mentioned the CEL was on. I had been having an intermittent issue with the driver's side cam angle sensor so I dismissed it initially. However when I got home and put it on my scan tool the code was for a wheel speed sensor. The wheel speed sensor in this picture. As a test I tried clearing the code to see if maybe it would take a while to come back, I assumed I might have nicked it when replacing the coilovers, but it came back instantly when I started the car. So now I'm kinda at a loss, I actually happened to have a spare sensor so I was able to swap it and the car is fine now. It just seems weird. It almost looks like they cut it on purpose. I'm interested in hearing what you guys think and how you think I should proceed. Thanks. submitted by DigBiggerNick69420 to AskMechanics [link] [comments] |
2023.05.16 18:11 BonsterBoo Should I replace all 4 tires?
I have a 2022 Tiguan 4Motion. One rear tire hit a big chunk of metal on the highway and it needs to be replaced.
I went into Les Schwab and they are suggesting I replace all 4 tires. The tires depth is about 1/32 to maybe 2/32 away from brand new. Do I really need to replace all 4 instead of just one tire? I understand the mechanics of all wheel drive and I do get that a significant difference in tire tread will hurt the vehicle. But is this enough of a difference?
Affording it isn’t an issue, I just feel like it’s depressing to spend that money and throw away perfectly good tires.

2023.05.15 02:35 Niaisperrana Car shaking when accelerating between 50-70mph*
Hello, so I have a 2011 Honda CR-V, which has been shaking when accelerating explained in title. About a month ago, I went to Les Schwab who told me it might be my tires due to a thing called road force (I am not very versed with cars so I'm not sure what this means). Therefor, he recommended new tires, so I got tires.
Fast forward to now, I have new tires, yes the car still shakes when accelerating. No shake in the steering wheel just the entire car and mostly on the front end. I took it to the dealership to hopefully diagnose but all they came up with was CV axle though I had just had one replaced.
My question is, could this problem possibly be related to my transmission? Or could it be the bearing that connects from the axle to my transmission? Any ideas would be helpful since I'm having a hard time finding someone to diagnose it. TIA
*don't really go above 70mph so I don't test it much over that speed
